At our house, we do not have a room designated to school time yet. We will use the kitchen table, the couch, my kids small table and chairs, the floor, pretty much wherever works. It's nice to just go wherever we want, but the down side of not having a "school room" is finding where to store all of our school supplies and materials.

If you would like it before I have it posted, shoot me an email and I can get it to you. Hope you enjoy. :)

Free Christmas Advent Ornaments
Hello all! Its officially the Christmas season. Fa-la-la-la-la, la, la, la, la! One thing I enjoy about the holidays is all the fun stuff there is to do. But at the same time, there is almost too much to do. So I thought I'd put together a fun little printable to help make things go a little smoother. I am calling it Christmas Advent Ornaments. What you do is print out the ornaments and the ornament cards, these have ideas on them of things to do each day. I have also included blank ornament cards so you can write in your own activities. Cut them out, glue the ornament and card together, laminate (optional), and then hang them on a garland, on your tree, put them on a Christmas chain, wherever your heart desires. Then each day you pick one and do that activity that day. These are easy, mostly free (definitely in expensive), fun activities the entire family can do and enjoy.
Hope you enjoy these. Please let me know if you have any problems opening the files.
Free Santa Hat Crochet Pattern
This is
one of my absolute favorite hat patterns. I made this hat for my son and a few
of my nieces and nephews two years ago. Now that my daughter is a little
older, and will sort of keep hats on, I decided to make one for her this year. This is an incredibly easy pattern. I changed the pattern slightly
to fit how I like to crochet. You can get the original free pattern on Cherished Bliss,
Materials Needed-
Yarn- Lava Wash by Bernat.
For the white yarn, I used some yarn I had left over, I think it was Caron
Simply Soft.
Yarn Needle
Pom pom maker, or click
here for how to make a pom pom.
Stitch Markers, not
necessary but very helpful. If you don't have stitch markers you can always use
a paper clip or piece of scrap yarn.
Don't Check the Box
When I started doing school time with my son back in August, it
was more challenging than I anticipated. I knew that there would be a period of
adjustment in getting used to doing this for both my son and I. But there were
a lot of little things I think I was naive about and I struggled with
having unrealistic expectations of what my son should have been able to do. Why
can't my 3 year old magically pick up a pair of scissors and know how to use
them not only in the right way, but do it well, when he's never touched a pair
in his life? Crazy!
After about 2 weeks of
struggling through, I kind of fell apart and started to really question if I
would be able to continue to do homeschooling with him. One of the things
I struggled with was my son was wanting to do things completely different than
what I had planned the lessons/activities to be. That was really hard for
me. When I expressed my concerns to my husband, he suggested something
that, for me, was a little unnatural. He told me "not to check the
box". As in, it's okay if my son does things completely different than
what I was planning and expecting. And it's okay if the butterfly pieces get
glued backwards and out of order and look nothing like a butterfly. And it's
okay if he wants to make the letter T over and over again with the peg board instead
of trying to make the letter A. The point is for him to try new things and have
fun with it. Once I got it in my head that this was an okay concept and my
whole world wasn't going to collapse if I tried it, things started going
better.
One of the things I had
been frustrated with was my son trying something once and then wanting me to do
it. I kept thinking, I know how to do this, I don't need the practice, this is
for him. My husband pointed out that he does this with a lot of things. He
likes to see us do something and then he tries it when he feels ready.
So I started to do the activities with him, not just sit and watch him.
What a difference!! There are so many little things that after doing it with
him a few times, he now really enjoys doing them on his own. I still sit and do
a lot with him, not because he can't or won't try, but because it is more fun
for both of us.
My new goal in our
homeschool adventure, remember "Don't Check the Box". So far it has
been a success and made things go a lot smoother and we get quite a bit
accomplished. I don't let everything go completely awry, but when it seems like
something's not working for us, I try to remember, what would this look like to
not check the box. It keeps my blood pressure down, my son happy, and school
time much more enjoyable.
Homeschooling, part 2
In the process of deciding if we should homeschool, My list of reasons to do it was growing very large. It has been really helpful and encouraging to read the lists I've found of why people homeschool. So I thought I'd add to the list of lists and share our reasons for why we have decided to homeschool our children. (This is in no particular order.)
1. Student:teacher ratio. Currently I have 2 children, with the thought of having 1 or 2 more. A 4:1 ratio compared to a 28:1 ratio, I'll let you do the math. :)
2. I don't want my kids to struggle with being a different learning type than what their teachers teaching style will be. I feel like that can have the potential for "behavior problems".
3. I love the idea that we can get "book work" done in a much shorter time frame than what they spend in school. Leaving more time for hands on, exploratory learning, field trips, etc.
4. Less time in structured school = more quality family time.
5. Zero to very little " home work". If you were to ask my husband why he goes to work, he would say, "to support me family". If you asked him if he enjoyed his job, he would say, "That is not important, I do it for my family". Family is very important to us. When I hear about how much time people spend doing homework and other extra curricular things that are keeping families from being together and enjoying time together, it makes me a little bit queasy. Not to say that these things are bad, it just seems like there is too much of it. Too much distraction from quality family time. My husband has 3 hours a day to spend with our children during the week, we don't want to have to spend that time doing homework, projects, or anything else we don't feel is worth our time and helping our family grow together.
6. I can protect their innocence a little longer. Am I trying to shelter them from the big bad world? No. However, I do think that children are exposed to much more than what is appropriate. If I can protect them from things until they are old enough and mature enough to process said exposure, then yes I will.
Free Halloween Cat Crochet Pattern
Growing up, my husband
remembers having a stuffed black cat that his mom had made as a Halloween
decoration. Long story short, he loved that thing. He told me about it our
first Halloween together and ever since then I have been looking for a stuffed
black cat we could call our own. 5 Halloweens later and I have had no luck! I
looked everywhere. Apparently snugly black cats are not something in high
demand here. Finally this year I realized, hey, I can crochet a black cat! So
away I went to search online for some ideas. I'm really big on free patterns
and when I can't find one that I like, I usually just end up looking at
pictures, and make it up as I go. I wasn't having a ton of luck there either.
Until I found this little guy. The pattern was a little
bigger than what I wanted, so I adjusted it, and this is what I came up with.
We decided to not add eyes and a mouth, for some reason it seemed more
fun.
This was a surprise for my husband, so when I finished it I let
my kids give it to him. After which they took it right back and played with it
the rest of the night. My husband loved it! It doesn't really look anything
like the cat he had growing up, but the memory of loving it and seeing our kids
love this one was exactly what he was looking for. Success!!
Materials needed
Needle size K
Lion brand Super bulky
100% acrylic yarn, two 5oz skeins
Yarn Needle
Stitch Marker (optional)
Ribbon to tie around
neck
Stuffing- you can use
anything really, rice beans, beads. I didn't want to make an extra bag to put
those in so I just used Poly-Fil Polyester Fiber-Fil. After a
month or so of little monsters playing with it, no stuffing has been pulled
yet. :)
Homeschooling, part 1
It wasn't very long before I stumbled upon the Letter of the Week by Confessions of a Homeschooler. This site is AMAZING! Her Letter of the Week program was just what I was looking for. The entire curriculum was all planned out and there were lots of fun activities. There was even a schedule to give an idea of how to go about doing something like this. This was perfect! Especially since this is my first time ever doing anything like this. Now, just a note here. I have never, ever, ever thought about or have ever wanted to homeschool my kids. The only thing I ever knew about it was the one family I knew growing up who homeschooled, was weird.
When I started my search for preschool ideas, there was no intention of homeschooling beyond preschool. I was so impressed and excited as I looked over and learned about the LOTW curriculum that I started to look at other things that Confessions of a Homeschooler had to offer.
How To Keep Fresh Strawberries Fresh (for a week!!)
I love when strawberries are in season and on sale at Costco. The only problem is I have a small, young family and we have a hard time going through 4 lbs in 2-3 days before they start going bad and I usually end up throwing half of them away. Last summer when I was telling my sister about this little dilemma she shared what is now one of my favorite food tips. She told me to soak them in vinegar water and it will make them stay fresh for at least 5 days. At first I was skeptical but quickly became a believer. I have been doing this little trick ever since and rarely do I end up throwing any away. So today I am going to share with you this simple but oh so amazing strawberry saving trick.
First things first. Remember that with all food, the fresher the food, the better. This will not resurrect 3 day old strawberries, (wouldn't that be amazing though). Generally I try to do this with in the first 24 hours of buying my strawberries but have found that I get the best results when i do it within the first few hours of bringing them home.
What you'll need
- 10 cups water
- 1 cup distilled white vinegar
- Bowl for soaking strawberries
- Knife and cutting board for cutting off stems (optional)
- Tupperware for fridge storage (or whatever you like to store your food in)
1. Rinse Strawberries
Baby Leg Warmers
So I know it's not exactly the season for leg warmers, but I made these a few months ago for my sister-in-laws new baby boy. Here is the link to the pattern I used, http://basteandgather.com/free-knitting-pattern-baby-frog-legs/. If this doesn't work, let me know. Happy knitting!
Blessing Dress
This was one of my favorite projects for a many reasons, mostly because it was the dress we blessed our baby girl in. Being able to make it only adds to the sentimental value. Because really, who doesn't love something homemade!
I purchased the pattern from the Sunset Crochet Etsy shop. It was actually pretty easy to make. Probably not a first time project, but definitely not advanced. This pattern is what I used to sew the inner layer.
Blog Design How-To's
I wanted to share a few of the links that helped me set up this blog (some I am no longer using, but are still really helpful). I hope that these can help you or at least point you in a good direction in making your blog what you want.
Happy blogging!

Fruit Salad Recipe
7 Layers of Fruit Heaven
My husbands family loves to get together and there is always an abundance of amazing food to eat when they do. This weekend being Mother's Day was no exception. I was in charge of bringing a fruit salad. I am no chef by any means, but I do enjoy creating something fun and delicious to share at parties.
After searching online for some new ideas, this is what I came up with. A seven layered fruit salad with French Cream. It was a great success and extremely yummy! This was really easy to make. If you can cut and mix you can do this. Basically, chop up fruit, mix cream, and then layer together. I made enough for about 30+ people so it took me about an hour and a half to chop and put it all together. However most of the fruit can be cut up a few days prior, that will be a huge time saver.
Here is the recipe.
