I love when strawberries are in season and on sale at Costco. The only problem is I have a small, young family and we have a hard time going through 4 lbs in 2-3 days before they start going bad and I usually end up throwing half of them away. Last summer when I was telling my sister about this little dilemma she shared what is now one of my favorite food tips. She told me to soak them in vinegar water and it will make them stay fresh for at least 5 days. At first I was skeptical but quickly became a believer. I have been doing this little trick ever since and rarely do I end up throwing any away. So today I am going to share with you this simple but oh so amazing strawberry saving trick.
First things first. Remember that with all food, the fresher the food, the better. This will not resurrect 3 day old strawberries, (wouldn't that be amazing though). Generally I try to do this with in the first 24 hours of buying my strawberries but have found that I get the best results when i do it within the first few hours of bringing them home.
What you'll need
- 10 cups water
- 1 cup distilled white vinegar
- Bowl for soaking strawberries
- Knife and cutting board for cutting off stems (optional)
- Tupperware for fridge storage (or whatever you like to store your food in)
1. Rinse Strawberries
2. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to 10 cups of cold water in a large bowl.
3. Cut stems off strawberries and place strawberries in vinegar water.
4. Once you have all the strawberries in the bowl. soak for 10 minutes.
5. Strain and rinse in cold water.
6. Put in storage containers and place in fridge.
7. ENJOY for days!!!
I have had strawberries stay day 1 fresh for up to a week. This doesn't change the taste at all as long as you rinse them after soaking. If you are soaking more or less than 4 lbs you can adjust the amount of water and vinegar you use, i.e. 5 cups water with 1/2 cup vinegar or 15 cups water with 1 1/2 cups vinegar. I have yet to use this on other produce but I have heard you can.
